You could try: WHERE ' ' + table1.errorcode = table2.errorcode but it might not be any better. What I would prefer to do is simple: UPDATE table2 SET errorcode = substring(errorcode,2,9) to fix the bad data. The "9" would be used as the length of the substring if the column was varchar(10) - adjust accordingly.
